Richland County Regional Solid Waste Management Authority sponsored a poster contest for grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. The theme was Richland Recycles and our students did an amazing job creating posters based off of saving the environment, reducing waste, reusing, composting, pollution, and electronics recycling.

Our Outstanding Owl (Student of the Week)
We will begin our Student of the Week celebrations in April. Here is a reminder of what happens on each day… Each day will have something special that is honoring the student. They also get to be the teacher’s helper for the week. They will find out on Friday who the next student of the week will be. Monday- The student gets to bring in pictures of themselves, pictures they’ve drawn, and pictures of family to decorate the bulletin board (these will be returned to you). Tuesday- The student gets to bring in their favorite book to share. If it is a picture book they get to read the whole thing, if it is a chapter book they get to read for 10 minutes. Wednesday- Parents will write a letter to the class telling us how special your child is to you. Send the letter in a sealed envelope to school with your child, and I will read the letter to the class at class meeting. The content of the letter is up to you, but you may want to choose from the following ideas: Describe special or funny stories about your child for the class to hear, write a silly or serious poem about your child, tell us some neat things we may not know about your child, send silly or special pictures with a letter describing the pictures, or write a short story with your child as the main character. You may also send a video for the class to watch if you choose. Thursday- If possible, join your child in the cafeteria for a special lunch on this day. You may also choose to invite a sibling or a favorite relative to be your child’s lunch buddy. You can have the buddy be a surprise or let your child know ahead of time. If you are unable to make it during our lunch period (11:30-12:00), please let me know, and we will plan a special lunch for your child. Friday- The student will be recognized with a certificate and a pencil and will get to announce the next student of the week. A third grader in Mrs. Fennell's class was chosen as our school’s winner in the 2012 Richland County Third Grade Coloring Contest. This contest is sponsored annually by Richland Newhope to mark Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in March. V and Mrs. Fennell were invited to have lunch at Richland Newhope with Miss Wheelchair Ohio 2011. V participated in simulated disabilities awareness activities. We were so proud to have V representing Discovery School at this event. Here are some great ways to keep your children active and engaged in the world of math, science, and technology. ( I have visited all of the sites and read through the information, however, I do not get paid to promote this information, so please always read the fine print.) #1. http://www.wouldntitbecoolif.com/ The "Wouldn't It Be Cool If..." Call for Submissions (the "Contest") provides children, ages 10 – 15, with the opportunity to come up with a cool idea powered by math or science to make the world "more awesome" and to submit the idea for consideration. Judges and the general public will choose the winning entries, and prizes will be awarded in accordance with the Official Rules. Entrants will compete in one (1) of two (2) age groups, either 10 – 12 or 13 – 15. #2. Techie Camp http://techcorps.org/techie-camp Techie Camp is a full-day, week-long technology experience designed specifically for elementary and middle school students. The goal of Techie Camp is to engage students in activities that can stimulate a deeper interest in technology; as well as provide opportunities for them to express their imaginations. Techie Camps are offered at a variety of locations between June 11, 2012 and August 24, 2012. #3 Applications for Education http://www.apple.com/education/apps/ These applications will keep your children having fun while learning on their Apple programs. You can even download many Everyday Math Games for Iphone or Ipad for free! #4 Keyboard Skills http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/ The children love this interactive way to practice their keyboard skills. Full of lights, music, and fun characters. A Warm Welcome! Valentine's Day was a lot of fun at Discovery School! Our class party was an idea carried over from last year to create a theme based on our literature unit. The children created their boxes with a Charlotte's Web theme, we had a feast (manure piles(no baked cookies), Zuckerman's slop (Chex Mix), Wilbur's in a blanket, Charlotte cake, and Lemonade from the fair,) and a game of toss the pencils into the slop bucket. After school, we had the first ever Cupid's Carnival! We had Bingo, dancing, facepainting, cookie decorating, a craft, and a lot of family fun! Part of the money earned was donated to the American Heart Association. Discovery has a big Heart! In third grade cursive writing is a "write" of passage! I try to come up with creative ways to get kids interested in learning the skill. Here are some pictures of us having fun with cursive. I'd love your feedback, just leave a comment! Did you learn cursive as a child? How important do you think cursive is to learn today? What are some ways you help your child with cursive? |
